Carmel High Ranked in the Top 1 Percent of All U.S. High Schools
One of the benefit of owning a home in Carmel? Carmel High is one of the best schools in the nation. As a mother with two boys active in the high school, I have to say I could not be more proud to know their getting the best education. Another plus? Carmel's real estate market is prime for families that place school #1 on their list.

Carmel High occupies an honored place among the most select high schools in the entire nation. The Washington Post placed Carmel High in the top one percent of America's Most Challenging High Schools in 2013 with a ranking of 224th out of more than 37,000 public and private high schools in the United States. Of those schools, just over 2,000 even made it to the ranking, which places Carmel High in an exclusive position on an already elite list.
Carmel High also moved up dramatically from its standing in the same survey in 2012, when it was ranked 356th.
In the Washington Post's state rankings, Carmel High was listed as the 26th Most Challenging High School within California. That position is even more noteworthy when it is noted that of the 25 schools above Carmel High, only six were open all students. The remainder were magnet, university, charter or private high schools.
The Washington Post survey is not the only prestigious honor that Carmel High has recently received. Carmel High was also just named one of the nation's best high schools by U.S. News and World Report magazine. Carmel High was ranked 331st nationwide by U.S. News, which collected data on more than 21,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
Carmel High was one of only 500 schools in the nation to receive a gold medal, the highest award in the U.S. News survey.
Carmel Unified School District Superintendent Marvin Biasotti said, 'For the past decade, Carmel High and Carmel Unified have worked hard to improve the opportunities for our graduates to attend college. These rankings validate that those efforts have haven been highly successful.
The Washington Post has been ranking the nation's most challenging schools for the past 15 years. Schools are ranked through an index formula or ratio that takes the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given in a year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated.
A three-step process determined the Best High Schools in the U.S. News analysis. The first two ensured that a school serves all of their students well, determining whether the school's least advantaged students were performing better than average relative to similar students in the state. Those schools making it past the first two steps were then assessed on the degree to which they prepare students for college-level work.
Regarding the U.S. News ranking, Carmel High Principal Rick Lopez said, 'I am most proud of the fact that, not only did our school rank among the top schools in the state and nation, it obtained this status by raising the bar for all students.
