Vacation Itinerary for a Weekend in Carmel

September 17, 2024

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a longtime favorite destination for people from all over the country for a weekend visit (or longer) and has something that will create memories for everyone. Whether it's a romantic getaway, a girls' trip, a family affair or local stay-cation, if you're looking for a place with the perfect balance of relaxation and entertainment, you'll find it in our seaside village.
The Landmark Ocean Suite, offered through Carmel Realty, is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, upstairs-luxury apartment that boasts everything needed for the perfect Downtown Carmel stay. First, you'll be awed by its updated minimalist interior and living spaces before you marvel at the private balcony, fire pit, and barbecue that are included. Serene muted tones and sleek design provide tranquility for those who are ready to relax after getting to experience all that downtown Carmel has to offer. Located in the heart of downtown Carmel and just steps away from many boutiques, eateries, luxury treatments, and more, The Landmark is a top choice for accommodation during your stay, and as with any Carmel Realty rental, you'll have the option to be provided a private chef, concierge services, and almost any other detailed necessity you desire.
Upon waking on your first full day, head to Stationæry for a gourmet brunch. You'll be hit with the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls while you peruse the eclectic menu that has everything from their famous potato pancake with seasonally rotating ingredients, to elevated steak and eggs. Make sure to try their exquisite espresso and alcoholic beverage selection. If you're in the mood for a more relaxed farm-to-table feel, Carmel Belle is a staple amongst locals and tourists alike, with an emphasis on using sustainable and mostly organic produce from local farmers. For a classic and cozy atmosphere with unfussy breakfast and lunch staples, head to Little Swiss Café. It's known for the cheese blintzes, thin-style buttermilk pancakes and egg dishes, but your eyes will wander to the magical wall paintings in the cottage-like dining area. It's one of the many businesses that brings a European influence in the town.
After breakfast, visit one of the several acclaimed art galleries that line Carmel's quaint streets. Start with Westbrook Modern Art Gallery, which specializes in American art created between the mid-twentieth century and today, featuring many stunning abstract pieces by artists like Johnny Apodaca. Carmel's art scene will continue to inspire you throughout your stay, and you'll likely want to peak into Monica Graham Fine Art – a show room highlighting curated contemporary paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces by both seasoned and budding artists. On the same block is Host House, a home goods store with a focus on essentials for the home, such as glassware, barware, coffee table books, and personal accessories. Their detailed decor makes for perfect gifts or additions to your own living space.
Almost everyone loves a perfect chocolate treat, and there's no better iteration of chocolate everything than at the legendary Lula's Chocolates, a Monterey-based chocolatier with a storefront on Mission Street between Ocean Avenue and 7th avenue. Sea salt caramels, (with exciting flavors including vintage Merlot and Sriracha sea salt,) chocolate truffles, and nut clusters are just a few examples of what Lula's sells. Their toffee bars and macadamia nut rocky road are unforgettable. If you're in the mood for a healthier on-the-go option, The Nut Hut offers organic packaged nuts, seeds and trail mixes, dried fruit and more. Sweet or savory, the nibbles are oil-free and ethically sourced— perfect for keeping you energized for the rest of your stroll.
Carmel may be small, but the standards to which shopkeepers hold their stores is nothing short of impressive. If you're in the market for buying something sparkly for a loved one, or treating yourself to a gift, Fourtané is the place to visit for luxurious jewelry, watch, and bespoke purchases. Augustina's Designer Boutique is a known for their selection of gorgeous handbags, sublime jewelry, and quality coats and jackets that will suit any season and sea breeze. Couture brands such as Oscar de la Rental and Jimmy Choo are also available.
Carmel is a mecca for excellent food. Stop by Bud's Bar at La Playa Hotel for your appetizers—the brown butter corn bread and off-menu pretzel with mustard are the ultimate crowd pleasers. For entrées, some suggestions include 7D Steakhouse, where you can show up casual for upscale steaks, sides and oysters. And for a French flare, Anton & Michel serves steak tartare, duck confit, and seafood fricassee, but doesn't shy away from some Asian-inspired dishes as well, like the Japanese A5 Wagyu with soy and wasabi root. The outdoor dining in the iconic Court of the Fountains makes the experience all the more Carmelian.
If you plan your stay during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, which occurs every August, don't miss the Carmel Realty hosted second annual Ferrari Owners Club event. A curated collection of Ferraris and Italian motorcycle will be on display, the likes of which you won't see on the road everyday! The event begins in the morning on August 15th on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Dolores Street.
